Judges comments: What makes this painting stand out is the use of shadow and light, the
understanding of colour and form which together creates a solid composition that
contains visual impact.

Joy Roberts – The Lookout – Red Squirrel Aviemore
Judges comments: Although the judges felt that Joy had captured the red squirrel well in the
photograph perhaps a bit more consideration could be give to the composition
when editing a photograph, a little cropping to give the subject more space is
always good.

Judges comments: A beautiful sculpture, a pleasing shape to the eye, detailed, tactile and accurately observed.

Judges comments: Superb painting technique displayed by Jenny, the only criticism all three judges made was that they found the gold frames overwhelmed her beautiful artwork.

Judges comments: Stunning painting technique, wonderful cropped composition, the judges loved the use of light and shadow to draw one into the Lynx’s gaze.

Judges comments: The judges were so impressed by the life and vitality of this mosaic; it has
movement, composition, texture to create the accurate rendering of the Gibbon in
motion which separates it from the background and they felt she had really
captured the essence of it.

Judges comments: She has caught the Jizz of this bird with simplicity of form.

Judges comments: The judges felt that all four pieces deserved a citation as they could not choose just one on its own super technique and imaginative painting.

Frances Daunt – Badger on 1953 linen map featuring Cheltenham and Gloucester
Judges comments: Very original idea which the judges felt highlighted the sad decline of the Badger in the area due to badger culling; they liked the painting of the badger too showing
the powerful body rather than a silhouetted head.

Jill Collier – Ammonite Pot
This beautifully decorated pot made the judges smile, they loved how the design
of the various fossils was rendered around the pot. Ancient wildlife!

Jeanette Hannaby – Autumn Murmuration
Judges comments: The skilful use of her medium, colour and movement created a real feel of an
autumnal evening with the starlings swooping around the sky.

Judges comments: Sarais interpreted the four categories of the award with skill and an interesting and imaginative use of paper cut, mixed media and acrylic.

Judges comments: The simplicity of this rhino sculpture impressed the judges they felt it had captured the jizz.

Pauline Thompson – Sparrow Quintet
Judges comments: The judges unanimously loved Pauline’s house sparrows, the format, the
character of the birds portrayed which showed she has a good understanding of
the bird’s individuality.

Eric Watson – Majestic Master of the Skies
Judges comments: The judges felt Eric had really captured the intensity of the vultures gaze and
really liked the use of light and the negative space to create drama. Quintessential

Judges comments: This drawing says everything there is to say of the vulnerability of the Orang-utan the space creates the isolation of the lost habitat around its world as it clings on to
life.

Judges comments: Technique and composition very good, the expression draws you in and creates an immediate emotional response.

Judges comments: Lovely detail and technique, the use of subtle colour throughout has all helped to create the character of the wildcat kittens.
