TWASI MEMBERS SUMMER COMPETITION WINNERS

A new Annual Competition for all TWASI Members, sponsored by Sarais Crawshaw.

1.Ayse Rifat – “Twilight Hunter”

Ayse Rifat -Twilight Hunter - Oil

“This was inspired by a chance sighting of a silent and ghostly figure which glided graciously over my back garden late one summer’s evening, hunting for its prey, a sight I will never forget… a wild barn owl.

I was able to produce such a detailed piece with regular visits to a bird of prey rescue facility where I met Pepper the resident Barn Owl.

Meeting Pepper allowed me to study, document and understand the character and movement of barn owls, much deeper than ever before.

For me this was valuable knowledge, for not only creating such an intimate piece, but for future work she has inspired.

2. Christina Hopkinson – “A moment to reflect”

Christina Hopkinson -A Moment To Reflect

“This painting was all about colour and reflection from the very start.

These ducks were in the distance standing in shallow water in the River Wye in Bakewell, far enough away to be relaxed and unaware of me taking their photo.

There was actually another male with them, but it was their relationship to one another which convinced me to ignore the general compositional rule of painting odd numbers instead of even.

Then there were the colours! The striking iridescence of the male’s head alongside the subdued browns of the female… and those legs!

My unusual colour choice for the water was complete artistic licence, and chosen to create the contrast between it and the orange legs.

I elected for the portrait orientation in order to maximise the effect of shadows and reflections.

I tend to use my photographs for information only. I ask myself what the picture is about, and the answer to that question is the element I endeavour to convey to the viewer.
